Cornerstone worked with the Envia foundation. Envia Foundation is a mission organization dedicated to helping sustain and execute the mission of the local church for the transformation of lives, by equipping leaders, empowering people and engaging the needs of the community. Envia seeks to partner with under-resourced local churches who are reaching under-served communities. Currently their focus is on a small Methodist church in Nicoya, Costa Rica. Envia is excited to be working with Cornerstone UMC. If you would like to follow the Cornerstone/Envia group on their journey in July, “like” Envia on Facebook. You can find out more about Envia on our website: www.enviafoundation.org.
Leadership Team Update
Cornerstone uses a Leadership Team comprised of twelve people to guide and lead the church.
This biblical model is more effective for several reasons.
1) We are wiser together.
Proverbs 15:22 Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.
2) Accountability- Public leaders need peers who can speak into their lives and hold them accountable to the mission and ministry of the church.
3) Our gifts and talents are rounded out- Leaders have various strengths, weaknesses, gifts, and talents. When pooled together the ministry of the church is done more effectively.
4) The Workload is divided up- When leading together the heavy workload of leading the church is divided among many instead of on one or two people.
5) Encouragement-Leaders exist in a fallen world where there will be challenges and difficulties. When leadership trials occur we can strengthen and encourage each other for the road ahead.
This month we added Becky Nichols and Bruce Kalb to the team. They replaced Carolyn Pettit and Beth Rice. We are deeply appreciative of the leadership that Beth and Carolyn offered during the past several years!
Pastor Tim Receives the Harry Denman Evangelism Award
On June 8th Pastor Tim was presented with the Harry Denman Evangelism Award at Lakeside where the West Ohio Annual Conference occurs. This award is given each year to a Pastor in the West Ohio Conference who exemplifies exceptional ministry in the area of evangelism. What distinguishes a Harry Denman Evangelism Award recipient is the commitment to consistently introduce others to the Good News of Jesus Christ. Congratulate Pastor Tim when you see him.
Costa Rica Mission Trip
The 14 members of the Costa Rica mission's team continues to prepare for their July trip to Nicoya. Part of the team is preparing materials for VBS with the Nicoya neighborhood children. Through your generous Easter offerings, we are sending finances ahead of time for the Nicoya church to purchase food for meals that we will prepare and serve to those the church is seeking to minister to. Jennifer and Luis Palomo have created the Envia Foundation to support the Nicoya area. They minister out of Chapelwood UMC in Houston, Texas where our Pastor Tim and Jenn formerly worked and attended. Jennifer Palomo will be here in Portsmouth the weekend of June 25/26 to meet with our team and share with you at both services that Sunday.
Please pray as our team meets at various times over these next several weeks to team build, pray, and seek God's face. We know God has already gone ahead to prepare our way!
Southern Ohio Chrysalis -- Summer Flights Coming To Cornerstone In July
Cornerstone will once again have the blessing of hosting two Chrysalis Flights in July. The Girls’ Flight is scheduled for Saturday, July 9 through Monday, July 11. The Boys’ Flight is scheduled for Saturday, July 16 through Monday, July 18. These flights are designed to bring participants closer to Jesus Christ and to give them a vision as to how God will use their gifts and graces to make our world a better place. Although Chrysalis is designed for high school youth, we madespecial arrangements for college students to attend our Chrysalis Flights. For many college students, summer flights are the only opportunity they will have to attend Chrysalis.
Every Chrysalis weekend consists of unique worship opportunities, prayer, fellowship, speakers, small group discussions, singing, great food, and just plain fun. The weekend leadership team consists of both youth and adults who have been well trained for the Chrysalis weekend. It has been a joy for the past nineteen years to observe both participants and team volunteers grow as Christian leaders serving their churches, local communities and overseas mission fields.
If you would like to learn more about the Chrysalis experience, please contact Joanne Charles, Community Lay Director for the Southern Ohio Chrysalis community, or Pastor Tom. Contact information is as follows:

HOPEFEST
Hopefest will take place at Portsmouth Elementary on Saturday, August 20th. Our hope is that we bless hundreds of kids with backpacks, binders, clothes, shoes, and haircuts. Back to school items can be expensive for families especially those with multiple children. There is a great need and we want to make sure we do our part to help better our children’s educations.
We are hoping that you will consider sponsoring a child. For $25 we can get a childeverything he/she needs to start the school year. We are hoping we can sponsor 500 kids.
Would you sponsor a child or multiple children? Designate on your check or offering envelope Hopefest if you can help.
